The right institution, the right funding, the right minds — shaped by the same education system, the same conference culture, the same consensus about what is worth asking.

My lab is a laptop. My budget is time. My method is a brain that doesn’t quite work like others — and that is probably why I see things they miss.

What institutions don’t tell you. Research is not neutral. It is shaped by what is fundable, publishable, and socially acceptable within a group. Groupthink is not just a human problem — it is a structural problem built into how academia functions. A lone brain outside that structure has a different problem: no one to test ideas against, no legitimacy on paper. But also: no consensus pressure. No one telling you the question is too strange to ask.

The FNC model, the SRT protocol, CognOS — they didn’t emerge because someone gave me a grant to develop them. They emerged because my brain couldn’t leave them alone.

ADHD as epistemic method

Neurodivergent brains are bad at many things institutions value: linear progression, administrative routines, sitting still in meetings. But they are often remarkably good at pattern recognition across domains, at holding several competing models running simultaneously, at not accepting an explanation just because it is convenient.

This is a real cognitive profile with real consequences — in both directions. Some days I produce more than an entire research team. Other days nothing is possible.

What works: local infrastructure, asynchronous communication, deep focus without a calendar. What doesn’t: academia’s timescale and its performativity requirements.

Freedom at the margin

There is a freedom in having nothing to lose from being wrong. No doctoral students’ careers depending on my thesis. No funder to reassure. No institutional identity to protect.

That means I can publish what I actually believe — and change my mind publicly when the evidence points another way.

MIT reads. Oxford reads. Carnegie Mellon reads. Sjöbo doesn’t appear in the statistics. That is not a complaint. It is an observation about where new epistemic energy actually emerges — and where the system doesn’t expect to find it.

This is not a success story.

This is an ongoing experiment in what independent research can be when it takes itself seriously without asking for permission.

The laptop is on. The models run locally. The brain does what it does.

That’s enough.

GITHUB

X

Substack

Linkedin

Published on Base76 Research Lab Most AI laboratories have one thing in common: they exist to legitimize research already approved by the system.
